Now that terrorism is spreading like a virus throughout the entire world, finally we see a backlash from others who just didn’t get it after America’s 9/11. While America’s politicians threaten to emasculate the Patriot Act, it took Madrid, and now the second London barrage of mass transit attacks in 2 weeks, along with the memory of innocent Iraqi children amidst befriending American soldiers being blown to shreds to finally alert the world that terrorism affects all.

By popular request, and the most often sought info on the show, here's the whats and whyfores of the supplement regimen Heliene and I take every day.  Well, ok, she remembers to take them, being a holistic nutritionist, and I usually do!......

Start with the basics, numero uno....a good multivitamin.  We prefer capsules to insure absorption (beware the 'clink' factor, you know), but any solid multi is better than none at all.  Don't succumb to the label dressing with this and that additive for energy, weight control, or who knows what.  Stick with the basics.  It's like a term life policy, cheap with potential great safety net payoffs.

Next up, and probably THE most important of the bunch for most of us eating  SAD (Standard American Diet) is an Omega -3 (fish oil) supplement.  Get between 2-3 grams of highly purified (no toxins, little risk for fishy burps) oil.  The usual EPA:DHA ratio is 3:2.  Shoot for better than 1000 mg of EPA daily.  Take it with meals.  Good for lipid balance, antiinflammatory effect, and healthy nerve cells.

Third....a combo of Calcium/Vitamin D/Magnesium, either as one or separate supplements.  Calcium goals for healthy adults are 1000mg daily in divided doses, but for adolescents, pregnant women and postmenopausal women or those with thinning bones, go for 500 mg 3 times a day.  Most have Vitamin D included but the current recommendations of 1000 IU daily may require addition of separate Vitamin D.  Of course 3 times a week spent in the sun for 15 minutes or so will help here.  Finally, magnesium is important for Calcium assimilation and prevents excessive ecretion in the urine.  Also helps sleep and in some, headaches.

Number four is a good B-comples.  Containing the spectrum of essential B vitamins, it may help with carbohydrate metabolism, stress management through neurotransmitter synthesis.and is non toxic.....except it gives nearly fluorescent urine, but don't worry, no harm.

Finally, and very much Fabulous, is a broad spectrum antioxidant.  I'm not talking an A/C/E pill popular in the 90's.  This "splitting" mentality borne of Western medicine is great for digitalis as a specific therapeutic component of the purple foxglove plant, but with antioxidants, we want the full symphony of complementary and coeffective micronutrients found in fruits and vegetables.  So a "fruit and veggie in a capsule" type product fills the bill.  I take one called Juice Plus which has peer reviewed basic research supporting the notion that it assists maintaining high antioxidant blood levels, reduces DNA damage even in smokers, and some exciting work showing it maintains vessel health.  There are other credible companies marketing similar products, but none to my knowledge has gone the extra mile with published research.  Having said that, the product is multilevel marketed, which is unfortunate:  Too much hype, unsubstantiated clinical 'cures' that are anecdotal, and too high a price.  So it's your call on this one, just try to get the whole food in a convenient capsule form.  Usually, this class is normally  taken morning and evening.

That wraps it up.  Of course if you're eating the garden of Eden Diet, live in a stress and pollution free environment, exercise and minimize calories, you may not need some or any of these recommendations, but as for most of us...they comprise a sensible crack filler for our sometimes nutritionally (though not calorically) deficient diets.
