Page 2 of 4 On the other hand, who would have thought a doc trained at a high powered mainstream institution like Washington U. Med School is out preaching the gospel of integrative and holistic medicine? A lover of mom and apple pie (even the occasional toasted ravioli) embracing herbs, spirituality, Yoga and herbs? This is pretty fringe and maybe a bit inconsistent, eh? But wait; there is a rationale for my epiphany. Aren’t a large portion of our medicines, from heart strengthening digitalis to cancer curing taxol, derived from plants? And isn’t stress a large factor in everything from the untimely holiday flu or cold to cardiovascular disease and cancer susceptibility? And ask anyone (including yours truly) who has been “cured” of an illness, but needed more to entirely feel well just how essential spirituality, nutrition and targeted fitness are to whole health and well being. So how are you doing and how can I help? Given the “me first, the rest be damned” attitude of so many in society, including our so-called leaders and yes even doctors, you are increasingly left on your own to make it these days. We need governance by leaders, not vote grubbing politicos. We need healers, not “health care providers”. The trend away from rugged individualism, mutual respect and decency that built America and towards political correctness and a society of blame is disturbing. Does it bother you? Don’t you want the tools to become more assertive and influential—both towards your health and your community? Need a way to discern the right direction for you and your family? I’m glad to help you understand how smoking or overweight can and will destroy you before you’ve had time to fully dream the American dream, but don’t ask me (or the cigarette or fast food industry either for that matter) to be accountable for or facilitate your indiscretion. Instead let’s honestly face problems together, for everyone’s mutual good. Sometimes it’s painful, but the Right Thing must be acknowledged as our goal. Mine and yours. So when we talk arthritis or politics, I’ll give you my diagnosis and proposed treatment. It’s ok if you don’t see it my way, just be ready with the facts and some civility. We’ll both be better in the end. I’ve even been swayed a different way once or twice!
