Within the last 2 days, George Bush has unexpectedly earned a second chance. This is a chance to reinvent his administration in the mold of the man we elected, not the faux conservative he has become.
As Robert Bork said in a recent WSJ editorial, "George Bush has not governed as a conservative". While his tax cuts, preemptive missions against known and presumed Mideastern threats Afghanistan and Iraq, and success in encouraging faith based social welfare are testaments to his conservative genetics, Bush has repeatedly failed to display core conservative plummage. Now there is a chance, though. In a peculiar twist of fate, Bush can have a Rett Butler moment, start to give a damn and come out swinging. The low point in his rhetorical descent was the abyssmal failure to find the right words and fumble with his earpiece during a scripted conversation with sodiers in Tikrit, Iraq 2 weeks ago. Yes, I said a scripted session. Now with the save face Meiers resignation, the distraction of Libby's trevails and the just won Iraqi constitution referendum, it's time for the president to get a second wind, grab the Democratic Bull by the horns and govern as he campaigned. Yes, it's true the rule of the conservative 'mob' stole the day with the Meiers debacle. It's true that the sordid game of political death by media exposed Libby's, and perhaps others, intoxication with power. But unlike the hyenas like Reid and Leahy who reference the 'ultra-radical right', real mainstream grass roots Americans are fed up with all the gamesmanship, the sorcery without subtance, and the idyllic worship of Beltway skullduggery from whichever cauldron it spews. America's essence has been and need remain a healthy rogue rebelliousness. Our faith traditions have ingrained on the other hand a healthy consience, and if George Bush is the man of faith he claims to be, now is the time for introspection, contrition and repentance. We have always given a break to the beaten hero who rises to slay the dragon, the figher who somehow finds musters muscular magic to avoid the knockout, only to throw an astonishing and fight ending upper cut. Now George is David; the media, the elite, and even many bewildered supporters loom like Goliath. It's show time Mr. President! How can George Bush resurrect his 2nd term? Simple....be himself. Insiders report he is furious at the immobilization wrought by Plamegate. He should tell the American people as much. He should nominate a replacement for Meiers that will maximize the elite Democrats uncanny ability to wax not so eloquently until they become even larger caricatures. Their pomposity, lemming like stereotyping and lack of meaningful solutions render their cackling as theater of the absurd. And W should oblige. Nominate one of the apellate judges they've recently confirmed as a result of the gang of 14 compromise. Next, he should make across the board spending cuts in the name of disaster response and to validate tax cuts, a move long overdue. And of course he should immediately withdraw any aid going to the countries who compete for oil and jobs (India and China among them), applying it to impenetrable border security. All along, he should have fact sheets only when he speaks, and he should chat with us often. FDR had fireside chats; W should have spontaneous, unscripted and unexpected coffee house chats...places like Starbuck's, or any other local gathering place where organic foods and great minds mingle. Please George, meet the enemy on his turf. Stand tall, express righteous indignation, be forthright and throw your well placed stones. Goliath, bloated and too full of himself will fall easier than anyone imagined. Now is the time to reclaim your presidency Mr. Bush. You've forgotten that the vast majority of America understands the concept of forgiveness. But we also know that repentance requires contrition and a new course. Will you step to the helm and change rudder now? Will you for the rest of your last term shout at Goliath..."bring it on!"? |
